The drawing board and the set square have largely given way to the screen. Modern designers develop products using computer-aided design (CAD): software that lets them model an object in three dimensions, test it, change it in seconds and send it straight to a machine that will make it. More recently, artificial intelligence has begun to assist the design process itself, generating options and predicting how a product will perform. Both reshape what a designer can do, and both carry risks worth understanding.

This note examines designing with digital tools. It sets out the advantages and disadvantages of using CAD to design resistant-materials products, from accurate 3D modelling and easy editing to the cost and training they demand. It then weighs the benefits and risks of using artificial intelligence in product design, helping you argue both sides of a debate that is moving fast in the real world.

Computer-aided design is the use of software to create, modify and refine the design of a product on a computer. For resistant-materials work the designer builds a three-dimensional virtual model of the object, which can be rotated, viewed from any angle, measured, dimensioned and changed at will. The same model can be tested by simulation, presented to a client as a realistic rendering, and exported directly to manufacturing machines. CAD replaces much of the slow, manual work of drawing every view by hand and redrawing it whenever the design changes.
