Some Places Are More Hazardous Than Others

Akopọ

Natural hazards threaten millions of people every year, but the risk is not spread evenly across the planet. Earthquakes cluster along plate boundaries, tropical cyclones form over warm oceans between 5 and 30 degrees of the equator, and volcanoes line up along the Ring of Fire. Understanding why certain places face greater danger than others is the starting point for reducing the damage these events cause.

In this lesson you will learn how to describe and explain the global distribution of earthquakes, volcanoes and tropical cyclones. You will study the plate tectonic theory that drives seismic and volcanic hazards, the atmospheric and oceanic conditions that generate tropical cyclones, and the scales scientists use to measure each type of hazard.

  1. Characteristics, distribution and measurement of different types of natural hazards including tropical cyclones, earthquakes and volcanoes
  2. Causes of tropical cyclone hazards, including ocean temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind shear and Coriolis force
  3. Causes of volcanic and earthquake hazards, including the role of plate boundaries and hotspots

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Tokyo sits at the junction of three tectonic plates. The Philippines lies on a destructive boundary and inside the typhoon belt. Over 500 million people live within 100 km of an active volcano. Fertile volcanic soils and coastal plains attract settlement, and the same processes that create those advantages also create hazards.
