Prose Fiction

Akopọ

One novel, studied whole, examined for 30 marks in about forty-five minutes with the book shut. That is the prose half of Paper 1, and the two things that make it demanding are not the ones students expect. It is not the length of the novel and it is not the difficulty of the language. It is that you must quote from memory, and that you are given a choice between two questions that reward completely different preparation.

This lesson sets out both. You will see what a passage-based answer looks like when it moves properly between the extract and the rest of the novel, and what an essay-style answer looks like when it argues rather than retells. You will also see the six-level mark scheme taken apart level by level, because it is the same grid for every question on every paper of this qualification, and knowing what separates level 3 from level 5 is worth more than another reread of the book.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Students will study one novel from the list of set texts. Students should study the whole text. Choose one of the following:
  2. Charles Dickens: Great Expectations
  3. Harper Lee: To Kill a Mockingbird
  4. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: Purple Hibiscus
  5. Kazuo Ishiguro: Never Let Me Go
  6. Markus Zusak: The Book Thief
  7. OxfordAQA Exams Short Stories Anthology.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

The specification is brief here and every word of it counts: students will study one novel from the list of set texts, and students should study the whole text. One novel, not several. The whole of it, not the parts your class had time for.
