Forest Ecosystems

Akopọ

Forests cover less than a third of the land yet hold most of its living things, store huge amounts of carbon and quietly regulate water and climate for everyone. Tropical rainforests alone are home to more than half of all known plant and animal species. When a forest is cleared the loss is rarely just trees: soils wash away, rivers silt up, rainfall patterns shift and species vanish before we have even named them.

In this lesson you will learn how a rainforest is structured into layers, what drives deforestation, and the chain of impacts that follows when the trees go. You will then examine why forests must be managed sustainably, from their role as carbon sinks to flood control and medicine, and study real examples of clearance and of forests being managed for the future.

  1. 5.2.1 Describe and explain the causes of deforestation, limited to: (a) logging and timber extraction (b) subsistence and commercial farming (c) roads and settlements (d) rock, ore and mineral extraction (e) hydro-electric power stations (f) climate change.
  2. 5.2.2 Describe and explain the impacts of deforestation, limited to: (a) habitat loss (b) loss of biodiversity (c) soil erosion and desertification (d) silting and flooding (e) global warming (f) changes to rainfall patterns (g) genetic depletion.
  3. 5.2.3 Define sustainable management of forests as balancing the needs of the environment, wildlife and humans while conserving forests for future generations.
  4. 5.2.4 Describe and explain the need for the sustainable management of forests, limited to: (a) climate regulation: trees act as carbon sinks and stores (b) role in water cycle: interception, water uptake, transpiration and surface run-off (c) flood control (d) prevention of soil erosion (e) genetic resource (f) food, medicine and raw materials (g) opportunities for recreation, ecotourism and education.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Deforestation is one of the most heavily examined topics in the course because it links climate, soil, water and biodiversity in a single story of cause and effect. Questions reward students who can explain not just that a forest is valuable, but exactly how clearing it leads to soil erosion, flooding, global warming and species loss, and how sustainable management balances people and the environment.
