Direct Data Entry And Associated Devices

Akopọ

Tap a card on a reader and the bus lets you on; wave a phone over a square pattern and a website opens; an exam board feeds ten thousand answer sheets through a machine and the results appear in minutes. None of this involves anyone typing. This is direct data entry, where a device captures data automatically with little or no human effort, faster and more accurately than a keyboard ever could.

In this lesson you will meet the direct data entry devices the Cambridge syllabus requires: magnetic stripe readers, chip and PIN readers, RFID readers, optical mark recognition, optical character recognition, barcode readers and QR code scanners. You will learn how each one captures data, where it is used, and how to weigh its advantages and disadvantages so you can pick the right one for a given system.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Direct data entry.
  2. Characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of direct data entry devices including: magnetic stripe reader, chip and PIN reader, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader, Optical Mark Recognition/Reader (OMR), Optical Character Recognition/Reader (OCR), bar code reader, QR scanner.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Keying data in by hand is slow and introduces mistakes. Wherever large volumes of data must be captured quickly and reliably, at a checkout, a border control desk, a library or a marking centre, direct data entry (DDE) takes over. Examiners test whether you can match a DDE device to a situation and justify it: why a supermarket uses barcodes, why an exam board uses OMR, why a passport office uses OCR. Understanding how each device works, and its trade-offs, is what lets you answer.
