Project Planning And Management

Akopọ

Twelve of the sixty marks in the individual project are for a document most students would not think of as work at all: the plan, and the running record of what happened to it. Not the findings, not the writing, not the conclusion. The plan. That single fact explains why two candidates can research the same question with the same care and finish twenty marks apart.

This lesson covers the eight things the specification lists under project planning and management, in the order you will meet them: reading the requirements of the qualification accurately, planning your time, fixing a topic, area and working title within the word limit, mapping the resources you can actually reach, deciding between secondary and primary research, monitoring progress against the plan, writing a risk assessment, and submitting the evidence. You will build a schedule backwards from a deadline, audit a set of resources, and turn a vague worry into a written risk assessment.

Ask a candidate three weeks into a project what she is doing and you learn a great deal. If the answer is a sentence about her topic, she is working on the report. If the answer is which objective she is on, what she expected to have finished by now and what she has done about the gap, she is working on the project. Only the second candidate is generating evidence for IP2, and IP2 is worth twelve marks: as much as all of the researching, and twice as much as deciding the topic in the first place.
