Coastlines are among the most contested spaces on Earth. They attract tourists, provide livelihoods for fishing communities, support unique ecosystems, and house millions of people, yet they are constantly reshaped by waves, tides and storms. When the sea threatens to flood or erode, decisions about how to respond pit conservation against development and short-term cost against long-term sustainability.

In this lesson you will learn how conflicts arise between different coastal users, why coastal flooding occurs, and how it can be predicted and prevented. You will compare hard and soft engineering strategies, evaluate their costs and benefits, and study real-world case studies from both a developed and a developing or emerging country.
