Selecting And Synthesising Information

Akopọ

The highest-tariff reading tasks do not just ask what a text says; they ask you to do something with it. You take ideas out of one or more texts, choose the ones that serve your purpose, weave them together and recast them in a new form, a speech, a letter, an article, for a new audience. This is where reading and writing meet, and where the biggest blocks of marks on both papers are decided.

This lesson teaches you to select material for a clear purpose and audience, to synthesise ideas from across a text rather than copy them in order, and to develop a borrowed idea into your own. We model each move on short invented texts, contrast a copied response with a developed one, annotate a model paragraph, and finish with an exam-style task marked the way the criteria reward it.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Select appropriate information for a specific purpose and audience.
  2. Synthesise ideas drawn from one or more texts into a coherent response.
  3. Use material from a text to inform directed writing in a new form.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Two of the largest tasks on the syllabus turn on this skill. On Paper 1, Question 4 (20 marks) asks you to write in a given voice or form, such as a letter, journal, interview or speech, using and developing ideas from the texts: up to 10 marks reward your reading (selecting and developing ideas) and up to 10 reward your writing. On Paper 2, Section A Directed Writing (40 marks) asks you to read one or two short texts and write in a specified form, evaluating ideas and opinions from both: up to 15 marks for content (reading) and up to 25 for the quality of writing. Both reward the same core ability: selecting the right material and synthesising it into a purposeful new piece.
