Communication Graphics

Akopọ

Some graphics are looked at. Communication graphics are used. A transport diagram, a recycling symbol, a set of assembly instructions or a chart in a newspaper all have a task to complete, and they either complete it or they do not. Nobody praises a diagram that worked; they simply arrive at the right platform. That is a demanding kind of success to design for, and a very satisfying one.

This note is about making information usable: how a photograph is reduced to a symbol that still reads at a glance, why a transport diagram is deliberately the wrong shape, what makes a chart honest or dishonest, and how a wordless instruction sequence can be understood by someone who shares no language with you. You will work with real systems that have carried millions of people and with the tests you can run on your own designs in five minutes.

  1. Use communication through graphics to develop solutions for worldwide identity
  2. Explore traditional and digital graphic media in both two- and three dimensions

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Communication graphics is the branch of graphic design that turns information into something a stranger can act on. Its outputs are pictograms and icon sets, diagrams, charts and data graphics, maps and transport diagrams, instruction sequences, safety and hazard symbols, exhibition graphics and interface icons. The specification frames it as developing solutions for worldwide identity, and that phrase is doing real work: a symbol that only makes sense to people who read your language, or who grew up with your objects, has not solved the problem.
