Structured Programming

Akopọ

Two programs do the same job. One is nine hundred lines in a single block, with a handful of variables that anything can change and a control flow that jumps forwards and backwards. The other is thirty named blocks of thirty lines, each one handed exactly what it needs and handing back exactly what it produced. Both work today. Only one of them can be changed next year by somebody who did not write it.

That difference is what this topic is about. The structured approach is not a language feature or a syntax rule; it is a way of building programs, and the specification names its parts precisely: modularised programming, clear and well documented interfaces made of local variables and parameters, and return values. This lesson describes each of those, explains the advantages the approach brings, and shows what the alternative actually looks like, because the advantages are hard to feel until you have seen the problem they solve.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Describe the structured approach to programming.
  2. Explain the advantages of the structured approach.

The specification asks two things about the structured approach: describe it, and explain its advantages. The describing half is the one candidates lose marks on, because it is easy to answer with the word tidy and stop. The specification is specific about what a description must contain, and it names three elements.

  1. Which of these is NOT part of the structured approach as described in the specification? A. Clear, well documented interfaces B. Modularised programming C. Return values D. Using global variables to share data between modules Answer: D
  2. What is a module? A. A file that stores program data B. A self-contained part of a program that performs one identifiable task C. A variable that can be seen throughout a program D. A loop that repeats a fixed number of times Answer: B
  3. Which term does the specification say examinable material will use for both arguments and parameters? A. Argument B. Interface C. Parameter D. Variable Answer: C
  4. Why does the structured approach make errors easier to find? A. Programs written this way contain fewer statements B. A local variable can only have been changed inside its own module C. The compiler checks structured programs more thoroughly D. Structured programs run more slowly, so faults are visible Answer: B
  5. A module can be rewritten without affecting any of the code that calls it, provided that: A. It is called only once B. It contains no loops C. It uses only global variables D. Its interface is unchanged Answer: D
