Design For Print

Akopọ

A design on a screen is a proposal. A design on paper is a fact. Between the two sit stock and grain, ink limits and screen rulings, bleed and trim, folding and binding, and a machine that will do exactly what your file tells it to do rather than what you meant. Every designer learns this the first time a poster comes back with a white hairline down one edge.

This note is about the production reality of printed work: choosing a paper and a process, understanding why the vivid colour on your monitor cannot be printed, setting a page up so it survives the guillotine, working out why a booklet must have a page count divisible by four, and using folds, cuts and finishes as design decisions rather than afterthoughts. Get this right and your ideas arrive intact.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Use design-based solutions in media for creating visual and written material for public distribution
  2. Develop solutions in both traditional print and digital technology

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Design for print covers work made for public distribution: posters, books, magazines, newspapers, leaflets, catalogues, tickets, labels, record sleeves, exhibition print. What separates it from every other area of study is that the finished piece is manufactured. Somebody has to choose a paper, a process, a page size that cuts economically from a press sheet, an ink specification and a binding, and every one of those choices changes what the design can be.

  1. Why must a saddle-stitched booklet have a page count divisible by four? A) Because four colours are used in printing B) Because each folded sheet carries four pages, two on each side C) Because staples are inserted in groups of four D) Because paper is supplied in packs of four sheets Answer: B
  2. What is bleed? A) Ink spreading into the paper fibres on an uncoated stock B) Artwork extended beyond the trim line so cutting tolerance never exposes unprinted paper C) The gap left in the gutter of a perfect-bound book D) The loss of colour when RGB is converted to CMYK Answer: B
  3. A designer needs an exact brand colour that lies outside the process gamut. The correct solution is to: A) Increase the saturation in the CMYK file B) Specify it as a spot ink printed from its own plate C) Print on a brighter white stock D) Use a finer halftone screen Answer: B
  4. For a run of 60 full-colour 24-page catalogues needed in ten days, the most appropriate process is: A) Offset lithography B) Digital printing C) Screen printing D) Gravure Answer: B
  5. Roughly what resolution should a photographic image have at its final printed size? A) 72 pixels per inch B) 150 pixels per inch C) 300 pixels per inch D) 1200 pixels per inch Answer: C
