The Individual Talk

Akopọ

For a few minutes you stand and the room is yours. The individual talk is your chance to show that you can take a topic you care about, shape it into something an audience wants to follow, and deliver it with control. It is not about reading a memorised essay aloud or talking faster to fill the time. It is about choosing well, structuring clearly, and speaking so that a listener stays with you from the first sentence to the last.

This lesson shows you what a strong talk actually looks and sounds like. You will see how to choose a topic with enough to say, how to build a beginning, middle and end that an ear can follow, and how the small delivery skills, pace, pause, eye contact and emphasis, turn competent content into a confident performance. An annotated extract of a model talk shows the moves in action.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Describe and reflect on experience and convey complex ideas in an extended individual talk.
  2. Select and organise facts, ideas and opinions for a chosen topic and audience.
  3. Communicate fluently with clarity, focus and purpose, using effective delivery.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

The individual talk is the first part of Component 4, the Speaking and Listening oral endorsement. The whole component is worth 40 marks and is reported separately, on its own scale, alongside your written grade. Part 1 is a prepared talk of about 3 to 4 minutes that you deliver to the examiner; Part 2, which follows, is a 6 to 7 minute discussion that develops the same topic. Because the discussion grows out of your talk, the choices you make here set up everything that follows. A talk with real substance gives you plenty to discuss; a thin one leaves you scrambling.
