Developing

A chosen proposal is rarely ready to make. Developing is the stage where a promising idea is tested, refined and turned into a fully worked-out, buildable solution. Through modelling, both physical and virtual, the designer checks that the idea actually works, irons out problems, and nails down the exact form, materials and methods of construction. By the end of development the design should be detailed enough that someone else could make it.

This note covers how to explore the technical and functional aspects of a solution through modelling, how to communicate the main features of the developed design, how to specify form, materials and construction methods precisely, how to consider the whole product life cycle, and how to evaluate the developed solution against the specification to confirm or improve its fitness for purpose.

A proposal is a good idea; a developed design is a solved one. Development is where the designer answers all the questions a sketch left open: exactly how big is each part, what is it made from, how do the parts join, will it actually stand up to use, and how will it be made? The work moves from imaginative to technical and functional, and the evidence is no longer just sketches but models, tests, detailed drawings and refinements. A design that is not developed is just a wish.
