Technical Drawing Methods

Akopọ

Technical drawing is the shared language of the graphic products designer. A single, well-made drawing carries more reliable information to a client, a manufacturer or a marker than any amount of description in words. The skill is choosing the right drawing system for the job: a crisp orthographic working drawing when a maker needs exact sizes, a lively two-point perspective when a client needs to picture the finished product, an exploded view when a packer needs to see how parts fit together. Each system has its own rules, and using the wrong one wastes the drawing.

This note builds the full graphic-products toolkit: dimensioning and scale to recognised standards, the geometrical constructions that under pin accurate setting out, orthographic first and third angle projection with sectional views, the family of three-dimensional pictorial systems (isometric, planometric, one and two-point perspective and exploded views), assembly drawings with parts lists, and developments or nets for packaging. Every system is taught with the exact angles, conventions and decision rules you need at the drawing board and in the exam.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. demonstrate a working knowledge of dimensioning and drawing to recommended scales and standards
  2. understand how the following drawing techniques can be used in designing and making: - geometrical constructions, including division of lines and angles: regular plane linear shapes (triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and octagons), circles, tangents and tangential arcs, ellipses constructed by an accurate method (trammels will be permitted) - orthographic: first and third angle projection, use of scale and standard conventions, sectional views - three-dimensional (3D) drawing: isometric, planometric, one-point and two-point perspective, exploded views - assembly drawings: single drawing showing component parts, parts lists - developments (nets): 3D shapes and packages, temporary and permanent methods of joining developments (nets).

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Before a single line is drawn, a graphic products designer makes a decision that governs everything else: what does this drawing need to do? A drawing that tells a workshop the exact size of every feature has a completely different job from one that helps a customer imagine a perfume bottle on a shelf. The first must be measurable, flat and unambiguous; the second must look convincing and three-dimensional. Choosing the wrong system is the most common cause of a drawing that is technically neat but practically useless. So the central habit of this topic is matching the system to the purpose, then applying that system's conventions precisely.
