There Are Various Impacts Of Desertification, Deforestation And Climate Change On Fragile Environments

Akopọ

Degraded land, cleared forest and a warming atmosphere are not abstract environmental problems. They show up as a failed harvest, a family that moves to the city, a fishing village that loses its reef and a coastline that has to be defended or abandoned. This lesson is about consequences, and about sorting them clearly.

You will work through the social, economic and environmental impacts of desertification and of deforestation, then examine what climate change is doing to fragile environments and to the people who depend on them. The skill being built is classification: putting each impact under the right heading, and showing how one impact triggers the next.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Social, economic and environmental impacts of desertification (reduced agricultural output, malnutrition, famine, migration)
  2. Social, economic and environmental impacts of deforestation (loss of biodiversity, contribution to climate change, economic development and increased soil erosion)
  3. Negative effects that climate change is having on fragile environments and people (rising sea levels, more hazards, ecosystem changes, reduced employment opportunities, changing settlement patterns, health and wellbeing challenges, including food supply)

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

A smallholder in the Sahel does not experience desertification as a change in soil chemistry. She experiences it as a sack of millet where there used to be three, then as a decision about which child eats first, then as a son sent to the city to send money home. Impacts in geography are chains, and the strongest answers follow the chain rather than listing its links.

  5. Why does deforestation increase flood peaks downstream? A) Trees release water into rivers when they are cut B) Less interception and lower infiltration send more rainfall to the river as rapid surface runoff C) Cleared land absorbs more rainfall than forest D) Rivers flow faster in cooler conditions Answer: B
