Cultivation Of Cash Crops

Akopọ

A cash crop is one a farmer grows mainly to sell for income rather than to eat at home. Choosing the right crop and then growing it well is how a farm turns land, labour and seed into money. From the cereals that fill our staple foods to the legumes, roots, tubers and fruits sold in every market, each crop has its own recipe of soil, climate and care that the grower must follow to get a good yield.

In this lesson you will first sort the main local crops into their groups and name their products. Then you will follow one crop of real local importance, maize, all the way through its cultivation: the soil and climate it needs, how the seedbed is prepared, when and how it is sown, the spacing and seed rate, the fertiliser it is given, how its pests, weeds and diseases are controlled, and how the farmer judges maturity, harvests, stores the grain and keeps records.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. (a) name the main types of crop found locally (legumes, roots and tubers, edible fruits and cereals) and their products.
  2. (b) describe in detail the cultivation of one crop of local importance in relation to: • soil and climatic requirements • soil preparation • sowing or planting time and method • choice of suitable cultivars • seed rate and spacing • rates of application of fertiliser and manure • prevention and control of common pests, weeds and diseases • recognition of crop maturity • harvesting, yield and storage • record keeping (including a diary of events and production).

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Crops are the engine of most farms. Knowing how to classify them and, above all, how to grow one crop properly from seedbed to store is exactly what the 0600 syllabus asks for. The exam expects a named crop of local importance and real detail: the soil and climate it needs, the spacing and seed rate, the fertiliser, the pests and how they are controlled, and how the crop is harvested and stored. General answers score poorly; specific, well ordered ones score well.
