Unseen Poetry

Akopọ

Section B of Paper 2B is the last thirty marks of a Route B candidate's exam year, and it is the only place in the whole route where you meet a text nobody has prepared you for. Route A candidates get two unseen sections and can afford an uneven performance in one of them. You get one. That makes this section worth more attention than its thirty marks suggest, and it also makes it the most valuable single thing you can practise, because the practice is portable to everything else on the paper.

This lesson is built around the two things that actually decide an unseen mark: working out what kind of poem you are looking at, and having somewhere to go when the obvious points run out. Both are demonstrated in full on practice poems written for the purpose, and the same observation is written three times at three different levels so you can see precisely what the difference between them is made of.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. In preparing for the unseen poetry section of the examination students should experience a wide range of poetry in order to develop their ability to closely analyse poems. They should be able to analyse and compare key features such as their content, theme, structure and use of language.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

The specification's requirement for this section is identical to Route A's: in preparing for unseen poetry students should experience a wide range of poetry in order to develop their ability to closely analyse poems, and they should be able to analyse and compare key features such as content, theme, structure and use of language. Same sentence, same demand.
