Were The Revolutions Of 1848 Important?

Akopọ

In the spring of 1848 a wave of revolution swept across Europe with extraordinary speed. Within weeks the king of France had fled, the Austrian chancellor Metternich had abandoned Vienna, and rulers from Berlin to Naples were promising constitutions to angry crowds. For a few heady months it seemed the old order of kings, empires and censors might be swept away by the twin forces of liberalism and nationalism. Contemporaries called it the springtime of the peoples.

Yet within little more than a year almost every revolution had been crushed and the old rulers were back in their palaces. So were the revolutions of 1848 a turning point or a false dawn? In this lesson you will trace why liberalism and nationalism had grown so strong, what happened in France, the German and Italian states and the Austrian Empire, why most of the risings failed, and how to weigh up just how much they really changed.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

The revolutions of 1848 are the gateway to the great story of nineteenth-century Europe: the building of new nation states. They show you the two ideas that would dominate the next half century, liberalism and nationalism, in their first dramatic test. Understanding why these risings exploded so suddenly, and why they collapsed so completely, explains why later leaders such as Cavour in Italy and Bismarck in Germany chose a very different path to unity. Get 1848 clear and the unification of Italy and Germany makes far more sense.
