Cloth is the only art material that gets worn, that hangs, that moves when the person inside it moves, and that has to be washed. A textile designer therefore works with a material that answers back. The same design printed on stiff canvas and on fine silk is two different objects, and the same dye bath will colour a cotton shirt brilliantly and leave a polyester one almost untouched.

This note works from the fibre upwards, because in textiles everything downstream depends on what the material is. You will cover natural and synthetic fibres and how to identify them, yarn twist and structure, weave and knit and what each does to drape, why dye chemistry decides your colour choices, resist and print processes from indigo adire to screen and digital printing, and how pattern repeat and scale behave completely differently on a body and on a wall.
