Tables

Akopọ

A table turns a tangle of figures into something a reader can scan in seconds. Timetables, price lists, results, comparisons: whenever data has rows and columns, a table is the right tool. The skill is not just making one appear, but shaping it: the right number of rows and columns, headings that span several cells, numbers lined up on the right, gridlines shown only where they help, and rows sorted into a sensible order.

In this lesson you will learn how to create a table of a given size, place text and objects in its cells, and edit it by inserting and deleting rows and columns and merging cells. You will learn to format it: set horizontal and vertical alignment, show or hide gridlines, wrap text within a cell, shade cells and adjust row height and column width. You will also learn to sort a table so its data reads in the order the task requires.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Tables appear constantly in the practical papers, both as a way to present data and as something you are asked to edit and format precisely. The marks lie in the detail: a heading merged across the top, numbers right aligned, a row made taller, gridlines removed except where wanted, the rows sorted correctly. Knowing exactly which tool does which job lets you follow each instruction quickly and without distorting the rest of the table.
