Mixed Media

Akopọ

Mixed media is the area of study most likely to produce something genuinely surprising and most likely to produce a mess. The specification asks for the combining and manipulating of two-dimensional and three-dimensional media to communicate ideas, which is an invitation to put paint, paper, thread, photographs, wax, plaster and found objects onto the same surface. The invitation comes with a condition buried in the wording: to communicate ideas. Not to fill space, and not to look busy.

This note gives you the test that separates the two. Every added material has to do something the first material could not, and you have to be able to say what in one sentence. It also covers the unglamorous half of the subject that decides whether your work survives to be assessed: which glue holds what, why oil pastel refuses acrylic, why newsprint turns brown, and how to get a half-built surface onto an A2 sheet with nothing overhanging or folded.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Combine and manipulate two-dimensional and three-dimensional media to communicate ideas
  2. Use a range of mixed media materials and techniques such as wet and dry media, collage, objects, textiles, two- and three-dimensional elements, digital and non-digital application

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

A student adds torn newspaper, gold thread, coffee stains and a pressed leaf to a painting of a face. An examiner looks at it and asks the only question that matters: what is each of those doing that paint could not do? If there is an answer for all four, the work is mixed media. If there is an answer for one and the other three are there because the sheet looked empty, the work is a painting with decoration stuck to it, and the decoration will cost marks rather than earn them, because it demonstrates that materials were selected without judgement.
