Safe Working Practices

Akopọ

A workshop is full of tools and machines that cut, spin, heat and throw off dust and sparks, and they do not distinguish between waste material and a careless hand. Safe working practices are the habits and equipment that let you make things accurately without harming yourself or others. They are not an add-on to practical work; they are part of being a competent maker, and in 0445 they are assessed alongside the making itself.

This note covers safe working across the workshop: the safe use of hand tools, power tools, machinery and CAM equipment; the role of guards, clamps and emergency stops; and the selection and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as eye protection, dust masks, ear defenders, aprons and gloves. It explains not just what the rules are but why each one exists, so you can judge the right precaution for an unfamiliar task.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. demonstrate safe use of hand tools, power tools, machinery and/or computer-aided manufacture (CAM) equipment
  2. select and use appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) when working practically.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

The safest workshop relies on a hierarchy: first remove or reduce the hazard, then guard against it, and only then rely on personal protection. A hazard is something with the potential to cause harm (a spinning blade, hot metal, fine dust); the risk is the chance that it actually does, combined with how serious the harm would be. Good practice lowers risk in order: design out the hazard where possible, fit guards and use jigs and clamps so hands stay clear, follow safe procedures, and wear PPE as the last line of defence. PPE is essential but it is the bottom of the hierarchy, because it only protects the person wearing it and only if worn correctly; it does nothing to make the machine itself safer.

  1. Why should gloves not be worn when using a pillar drill or lathe? A. Gloves make the hands too warm B. The rotating tool can catch the glove and pull the hand in C. Gloves are never allowed in any workshop D. They reduce grip on the work Answer: B
  2. In the safety hierarchy, where does PPE sit? A. It is the first and most important measure B. It replaces the need for guards C. It is the last line of defence after removing and guarding the hazard D. It is only used by machines, not people Answer: C
  3. Which PPE is most important when sanding MDF? A. Ear defenders only B. A dust mask or respirator, because MDF produces fine harmful dust C. Leather gloves D. No PPE is needed for sanding Answer: B
  4. Why must PVC never be cut on a laser cutter? A. It melts too slowly B. It releases toxic, corrosive fumes when laser cut C. It reflects the laser harmlessly D. It is too thick for any laser Answer: B
  5. What is the safest way to hold a small piece of metal while drilling it? A. Grip it firmly by hand B. Rest it loosely on the table C. Clamp it securely so it cannot spin D. Hold it with a glove Answer: C
