Cutting, Shaping And Forming

Akopọ

Once a graphic product is marked out, it has to be turned into its final shape: paper, card and board must be cut, scored, creased and folded, and sometimes die-cut in their thousands. Each of these operations has its own tools and its own rules, and choosing the right method for the material and the quantity is what gives a clean edge, a sharp fold and a package that assembles first time.

This note covers cutting, shaping and forming of paper, card and board using the appropriate hand tools, power tools, machinery and computer aided manufacture (CAM). It explains knives and cutters for clean straight and curved cuts, scoring and creasing so board folds crisply, die cutting for high-volume shaped blanks, and laser and digital cutting as the CAM route, together with the safety practice that every cutting operation demands.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Turning a flat sheet into a finished graphic product is rarely a single action. A carton blank, for example, is cut to its outline, scored or creased along the fold lines, then folded and joined into shape. Each operation needs the right tool for the material and, just as importantly, for the quantity: a method that is perfect for one prototype is hopeless for fifty thousand, and vice versa. So the designer-maker is always making three linked choices - which method, which tool, and at what scale of production - and the answers depend on the material thickness, the shape required, the edge quality needed and how many are being made.

  1. Why is thick board creased or scored before folding? A. To make it heavier B. To stop the outer surface cracking when it folds C. To change its colour D. To make it waterproof Answer: B
  2. Which method cuts the outline and creases the fold lines of a carton in a single press, ideal for high volumes? A. Scalpel cutting B. Die cutting C. Scissors D. Hand creasing Answer: B
  3. What is one advantage of a laser cutter (CAM) for cutting card? A. It never needs a CAD file B. It can cut intricate detail directly from the CAD file with no tooling C. It leaves no edge effects at all D. It is always cheaper than hand cutting for one item Answer: B
  4. Why is a sharp blade generally safer than a blunt one when cutting card? A. It is lighter to hold B. It needs less force, so it is less likely to slip out of control C. It cannot cut skin D. It is more expensive Answer: B
  5. On which face of the board should you usually score or crease a fold line? A. The outside of the fold B. The inside of the fold, so the outer surface is compressed not stretched C. It makes no difference D. Both faces at once Answer: B
