Geometrical Terms

Akopọ

Geometry has its own precise vocabulary, and getting that vocabulary right is the difference between a confident answer and a confused one. A vertex is not just a corner, a chord is not the same as a diameter, and congruent means something quite different from similar. Once the words are exact, the shapes start to make sense.

In this lesson you will build the language of geometry from the ground up: points and lines, the four kinds of angle, the families of triangles and quadrilaterals, polygons and their nets, and every part of a circle from its centre to its segment. No drawing is needed here, only clear definitions you can rely on for the rest of the course.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Use and interpret the following geometrical terms: point vertex line parallel perpendicular bearing right angle acute, obtuse and reflex angles interior and exterior angles similar congruent scale factor.
  2. Use and interpret the vocabulary of: triangles special quadrilaterals polygons nets simple solids.
  3. Use and interpret the vocabulary of a circle.
  4. Use and interpret the following geometrical terms: point vertex line plane parallel perpendicular perpendicular bisector bearing right angle acute, obtuse and reflex angles interior and exterior angles similar congruent scale factor. (Extended only)
  5. Use and interpret the vocabulary of: triangles special quadrilaterals polygons nets solids. (Extended only)

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Every geometry question is written in this vocabulary, so a single misunderstood word can cost a whole answer. When a question says the triangle is isosceles, or asks for the exterior angle, or names a tangent to a circle, it is handing you information for free, but only if you know what the word means. Mastering these terms now makes every later topic, from angles to constructions to circle theorems, far easier to follow.
