Interpretation

Akopọ

Three statements, all Core, and between them they carry the part of statistics that cannot be done by a calculator. Anybody can find a mean. The marks in this topic go to the candidate who can say what a graph is telling them, compare two sets of data in a sentence that a reader could act on, and know exactly how far a line of best fit can be trusted before it becomes a guess.

You will read and interpret a wide range of graphs and diagrams and draw conclusions from them; compare distributions and make inferences; and recognise correlation and draw or use lines of best fit by eye while understanding what these represent. The specification's own note names the vocabulary you must use for the last of those: positive correlation, negative correlation, no correlation, weak correlation and strong correlation.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. [Core] read and interpret a wide range of graphs and diagrams and draw conclusions
  2. [Core] compare distributions and make inferences
  3. [Core] recognise correlation and draw and/or use lines of best fit by eye, understanding what these represent (Notes: students should know and understand the terms: positive correlation, negative correlation, no correlation, weak correlation and strong correlation)

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

A specimen Core paper shows a scatter graph, asks candidates to describe the correlation, then to use a line of best fit to make a prediction, and finally to comment on somebody's claim that the trend can predict the outcome for any number of lessons at all. Only the middle part is a reading exercise. The first and last are asking whether you understand what the diagram can and cannot support, and that is the whole of this topic.

  1. A scatter graph's points fall from left to right and lie close to a straight line. How should the correlation be described? A. Strong positive B. Weak positive C. Strong negative D. No correlation Answer: C
  2. Which of these is extrapolation? A. Using a line of best fit to estimate a value inside the range of the data B. Using a line of best fit to estimate a value beyond the range of the data C. Drawing a line of best fit with a ruler D. Ignoring an outlier Answer: B
  3. Two data sets have the same mean but one has a much larger range. What does that tell you? A. The two sets are identical B. One set is more consistent than the other C. One set has a higher typical value D. Nothing can be concluded Answer: B
  4. A pictogram shows 13 symbols in total, representing 260 items. What is one symbol worth? A. 13 B. 20 C. 26 D. 260 Answer: B
  5. A scatter graph shows strong positive correlation between two variables. What can be concluded? A. One variable causes the other B. The two variables tend to increase together C. There is no relationship between them D. One variable decreases as the other increases Answer: B
