AO1 Record

Akopọ

Every great piece of IGCSE Art and Design begins in the sketchbook. AO1 is about recording: capturing what you observe, think and intend as your project evolves. The examiner is not looking for a neat final drawing - they are looking for evidence that you have genuinely looked at the world, gathered material relevant to your starting point, and kept a running record of your thinking. Sketchbooks that feel alive, messy and purposeful earn far more marks than clean, empty pages.

This note explains what 'recording' actually means in the context of this qualification, which methods carry the most marks, how to annotate your observations so they become evidence of thought, and what a strong AO1 response looks like from a marker's point of view.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

CIE Art and Design is assessed entirely on process and outcome - you are never tested in a written examination. That means your sketchbook pages and accompanying sheets are the primary evidence for four out of four assessment objectives. AO1 underpins all the others: you cannot explore without first recording what is around you; you cannot develop ideas without reference to earlier observations; you cannot present a convincing final piece without a foundation of recorded research.
