English as a Second Language (Speaking endorsement) - 0510 CIE

Core And Extended Tiers, Assessment Objectives And Command Words

Akopọ

Two small things decide a surprising number of marks in this exam: knowing which tier you are sitting and what it allows, and knowing exactly what each instruction word is asking you to do. 'Give' wants something different from 'explain'; 'in your own words' is stricter still; 'complete the notes' and 'write a summary' each have their own rules. Behind every question sit the assessment objectives, the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills the mark schemes actually reward.

This is a reference note to return to whenever you practise. It explains the Core and Extended tiers and the grades each can reach, lists the assessment objectives for all four skills, gives a table of every command and instruction word with what it demands, and shows how the marks are shared across the three components. Once you can read a question for its instruction word and know which objective it targets, you stop losing the easy marks that careless reading throws away.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Understand the difference between the Core and Extended tiers and grades available.
  2. Understand the reading, writing, listening and speaking assessment objectives and how marks are distributed.
  3. Interpret the command words used across the papers and self-assess against them.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Marks are lost every session not because candidates lack the English, but because they answer the question they imagined rather than the one in front of them. A candidate who copies a whole sentence when the task says 'in your own words', or writes a full paragraph where the instruction asks for note form, has the skill but misreads the instruction. The instruction word and the marks available are a contract: they tell you precisely what kind of answer earns the credit. Learning to read that contract, and knowing the tier you sit, is the cheapest grade boost available, because it costs no extra English at all.
