Package Design

Akopọ

Packaging is the only graphic design most people pick up and turn over. It has to survive a lorry, stack on a pallet, stand up on a shelf, be recognised from three metres away, carry a legally required list of information in very little space, open without a knife, and then be thrown away responsibly. It is a three-dimensional object with a graphic surface, and the two cannot be designed separately.

This note works through the net and the die line, the materials and what each protects against, the hierarchy of the front panel and the crowded reality of the back, the shelf test that decides whether your design works at all, and the sustainability decisions that are now part of every brief. You will make things flat and fold them up, which is the only way this subject can be learned.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Design functional 3D material to protect, promote and communicate brand identity for a range of products and purposes
  2. Use a range of package design materials, tools and techniques such as traditional and non-traditional graphic media and construction processes and materials

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

The specification describes this area as the functional design of three-dimensional material to protect, promote and communicate brand identity. Take the three verbs seriously and in that order, because they are three separate design problems that have to be solved with one object.
