Globalisation Is Creating A More Connected World, With Increased Movements Of Goods (trade) And People (migration And Tourism) Worldwide

Akopọ

The phone in your pocket was designed in one country, built from minerals mined in several more, assembled in another and sold to you by a company registered somewhere else again. Nothing about that arrangement is natural. It became possible only because the cost of moving goods, money and information across borders collapsed within living memory.

This lesson explains how the global economy came to be organised in production and commodity chains, what made that possible, and what the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund and transnational corporations actually do. It closes on the movement of people, where the vocabulary has to be exact: economic migrant, refugee and asylum seeker are not interchangeable words.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Rise of the global economy (growth of production and commodity chains) and the factors encouraging it (trade, foreign investment, aid, labour, modern transport and information technologies)
  2. Role of global institutions, including the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and TNCs in creating a more globalised economy
  3. Push and pull factors (social, economic and political) that have influenced rates of different types of migration over the last 50 years, including medical, sport, tourism and economic

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Globalisation is the growing interconnection of the world's economies, cultures and populations through trade, investment, technology and the movement of people. It is not new in kind, since trade routes are ancient, but it is new in scale and speed. The distinguishing feature of the modern era is that a single product can now be made in stages across a dozen countries, because coordinating that has become cheaper than keeping it in one place.
