The Use Of Farm Chemicals

Akopọ

The chemicals that protect crops, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, are powerful poisons. The very property that makes them kill weeds, pests and diseases also makes them dangerous to the farmer, to people nearby, to livestock and to the environment. Used carelessly they can poison the user, contaminate food and pollute rivers; used carefully they are safe and effective.

In this lesson you will learn how to handle farm chemicals safely from start to finish: the protective clothing to wear, how to dilute and mix correctly, the precautions to take before, during and after spraying, and how to clean equipment without polluting water. You will also learn why chemicals must be stored in a locked, well-ventilated store, kept in their labelled containers, and why toxic and flammable products need special care.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. (a) explain the importance and methods of safe handling of farm chemicals, including the use of specifically designed protective clothing, correct dilution and mixing, precautions before, during and after application and avoidance of pollution when cleaning spraying equipment.
  2. (b) explain the importance of safe storage of farm chemicals to include chemicals that are toxic, (e.g. herbicides, insecticides and flammable, e.g. fuels).

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Every year people are harmed by farm chemicals that were handled or stored carelessly. Safe use protects the farmer's own health, keeps the food supply free of dangerous residues, and stops poisons reaching rivers and wildlife. The exam often asks you to SUGGEST safe actions, so you need a clear, practical list with the reason behind each one.
