Some of the most productive and biodiverse habitats on the planet develop in the narrow zone where land meets sea, shaped by temperature, salinity, wave energy, and sediment supply. Coral reefs, mangrove forests, sand dunes, and salt marshes each occupy distinct stretches of coastline and support food webs that reach far beyond the shore.
