Developing And Expanding Responses

Akopọ

The difference between an average speaking mark and a strong one is rarely fancy vocabulary or perfect grammar. It is development: the habit of answering a question and then keeping going, adding a reason, an example, a feeling, a what-if. Examiners say it plainly. The candidates who score well are the ones who develop their ideas at length, while weaker ones give a single sentence and stop, waiting for the examiner to rescue them with another question.

This note gives you a simple, repeatable way to expand any answer and to push a topic forward yourself. You will learn the moves that lengthen a reply without padding it, how to turn an opinion into a small argument, and how to hand the conversation back to the examiner in a way that invites more. Master this one skill and every other part of your speaking mark rises with it.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Give opinions and support them with reasons, examples and explanation.
  2. Expand answers beyond a single sentence to show range.
  3. Move a topic forward rather than giving short, closed replies.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

In the assessed discussion the examiner asks open questions so that you can show what your English can do. A bare reply, 'Yes, I like it,' shuts that door at once. It gives the assessor no range of grammar to credit, no vocabulary beyond the obvious, and nothing to reward on the communication scale. The whole test rests on the topic-card discussion, worth 40 marks, and development is what fills that discussion with markable language.
