Interaction And Conversation Skills

Akopọ

The speaking test is a conversation, and conversations have rules you already know in your first language: you listen, you answer the thing that was actually asked, you build on what the other person says, and when you lose a word you find a way around it rather than freezing. The candidates who do well are not the ones with flawless grammar; they are the ones who can keep a natural exchange going with the examiner.

This note trains the interaction itself. You will learn to respond relevantly so your answer matches the question, to pick up and extend the examiner's prompts instead of treating each one as separate, and to use simple repair strategies, paraphrase, fillers, asking for clarification, so a missing word never stops you in your tracks. These are the skills that make the whole test flow.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Engage in conversation, short talk and discussion confidently.
  2. Respond relevantly to questions and develop the assessor's prompts.
  3. Use strategies to keep talk going when unsure of a word or idea.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

In the assessed discussion the examiner is not firing unrelated questions at you and ticking boxes. They are having a conversation, led by a topic card, and listening for how well you take part in it. That means three things matter beyond the words themselves: that you answer the question you were actually asked, that you build on what is said rather than starting from scratch each time, and that you keep the talk going even when you hit a gap. The discussion is the only assessed part of the test and is worth 40 marks.
