Modelling

Akopọ

It is far cheaper to discover a problem in a piece of card than in a finished product. Modelling is the designer's way of making ideas real enough to test before committing to expensive materials and time. A model can be a quick block of foam that checks whether a handle feels right in the hand, or a fully working prototype that proves the whole product functions. Either way, the point is the same: build something you can look at, hold and test, then let what you learn improve the design.

This note covers the 0445 modelling objectives: the reasons designers make models in the first place; the different types of model, from rough exploratory models to full prototypes; and how to use a model to draw real conclusions that change the design. Concrete examples show how a model earns its keep by revealing things a drawing never could.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. understand the reasons for modelling
  2. understand different types of models including exploratory and prototype
  3. produce models and use them to draw conclusions that influence design development.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

A drawing, however careful, is still flat and silent. It cannot tell you whether a product feels comfortable to hold, whether two parts actually clear each other when they move, whether the proportions look right in three dimensions, or whether a mechanism really works. A model - a physical, often simplified, version of a design - answers exactly these questions. Designers model for several connected reasons:

  1. What is the main reason a designer makes a model early in the design process? A. To replace the final product B. To test ideas cheaply and reveal problems before committing to real materials C. To avoid having to make any drawings D. To use up spare workshop materials Answer: B
  2. Which type of model is rough, quick and made to explore an idea such as form or proportion? A. Prototype B. Exploratory model C. Finished product D. Working drawing Answer: B
  3. Which material is most suitable for a quick block model used to test the feel of a handheld product? A. Hardened steel B. Toughened glass C. Modelling foam D. Cast iron Answer: C
  4. A prototype differs from an exploratory model mainly because it: A. Is always smaller than the real product B. Is a more complete and accurate model, often working and in real materials C. Is never tested D. Cannot be made using CAD or 3D printing Answer: B
  5. What gives a model its real value in a design portfolio? A. How neat and attractive it looks B. The honest conclusions drawn from testing it and the design changes that follow C. The cost of the materials used D. How long it took to make Answer: B
