Component 3: Coursework (alternative To Paper 2)

Akopọ

Coursework lets you write about literature the way real critics do: two texts placed side by side, an argument built and rebuilt over drafts, and the luxury of time instead of the pressure of the clock. You produce two pieces, a longer comparative essay across two complete texts (around 1500 words) and a shorter comparison of two poems (around 1000 words). The skill being rewarded is the same in both: sustained, genuine comparison driven by one clear argument.

This note shows you how to choose texts that link meaningfully, how to find points of comparison and contrast, and above all how to structure an integrated essay that discusses both texts together in every paragraph rather than treating them one after the other. Every model below uses out-of-copyright writing so you can study the method itself.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Write a comparative essay across two complete texts (one drama plus a second drama or prose text), approximately 1500 words.
  2. Write a comparative essay across two poems, approximately 1000 words.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Coursework replaces the timed Paper 2 with two pieces you draft, redraft and polish over weeks. The longer piece compares two complete texts: one must be a play, and the second is either a second play or a prose text (a novel or short-story collection). The shorter piece compares two poems. The word counts are guides, not targets to pad out: roughly 1500 words for the text comparison and roughly 1000 words for the poems. Going far over is as damaging as falling far short, because examiners reward a controlled argument, not bulk.
