What Is Education And Schooling?

Akopọ

Every society teaches its young, but not every society does it the same way. Some children learn beside their parents in a field or a workshop; others sit in rows behind desks following a national curriculum; still others learn at a kitchen table or through a screen. Sociology asks a deceptively simple question: what is education actually for, and why does it take so many different shapes around the world?

In this lesson you will separate education from schooling, uncover the hidden lessons a school teaches without ever writing them on the board, and weigh up the strengths and limits of state, private, faith, single-sex and international schools. You will also meet the alternatives that challenge the classroom altogether: online learning, homeschooling, unschooling, vocational training and progressive schooling. By the end you will be able to compare them like a sociologist rather than simply praise or condemn.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Education is one of the agencies of secondary socialisation, which means it is one of the institutions that shapes who we become after the family has had its first say. The way a society organises its schools tells you a great deal about what that society values. CIE rewards candidates who can do three things here: define education and schooling precisely, separate the official curriculum from the hidden one, and compare types of school and approaches without simply declaring a winner. Get these foundations right and every later topic, from the functions of education to why achievement differs, rests on solid ground.
