Drama

Akopọ

Section B of Paper 1 gives your play the same 30 marks and the same six-level grid as the novel, and then asks for something the novel never asks for. A play was not written to be read. It was written to be performed in front of people who cannot turn back a page, who can see two things happening at once, and who know something a character on stage does not. Every mark in this section comes from writing about a text that has a stage in it.

This lesson is about the methods drama has that prose does not: what a stage direction is doing, why an entrance is a structural device, how a soliloquy changes the audience's relationship with a character, and what happens to meaning when Shakespeare moves a character out of verse and into prose. All of it is demonstrated on extracts from Macbeth and Julius Caesar, both out of copyright, so the analysis can quote them in full.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Students will study one play from the list of set texts. Students should study the whole text. Choose one of the following:
  2. William Shakespeare: Julius Caesar
  3. William Shakespeare: Macbeth
  4. J B Priestley: An Inspector Calls
  5. Arthur Miller: The Crucible
  6. Lorraine Hansberry: A Raisin in the Sun

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

The specification's requirement is the same shape as the prose one: students will study one play from the list of set texts, and students should study the whole text. What differs is everything about how that text works.
