The Structure Of The Earth And Distribution Of Earthquakes And Volcanoes

Akopọ

The ground beneath your feet feels solid and still, yet it is riding slowly across a planet whose interior is hot enough to melt rock. The Earth is built in layers, and its rigid outer shell is broken into giant slabs called tectonic plates that drift a few centimetres a year, about the speed your fingernails grow. Where these plates meet, the planet shudders, splits and erupts.

In this lesson you will travel from the inner core to the crust, name and place the world's main plates, and learn why earthquakes and volcanoes are not scattered at random but line up neatly along plate boundaries. By the end you will be able to read a world hazard map and explain exactly what is happening at each kind of boundary.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. The characteristics of the layers of the Earth: inner core, outer core, mantle, crust, lithosphere.
  2. The names and location of the main tectonic plates and how tectonic plates move.
  3. Types of plate boundary: divergent/constructive, convergent/destructive, convergent/collision, conservative/transform and the location of earthquakes and volcanoes.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Almost every dramatic event in physical geography, from the Himalayas to the eruption of a volcano to the shaking of a city, traces back to plate tectonics. Understanding the structure of the Earth and how its plates move is the foundation for the whole tectonic-hazards theme. Examiners expect you to name the layers, name and locate the major plates, and classify the four boundary types, then use that knowledge to explain the global distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes.
