Reading For Explicit And Implicit Meaning

Akopọ

Every mark on the Reading paper begins with one skill: understanding what a text actually says, and what it quietly suggests without saying. Some questions ask you to retrieve a fact that sits openly on the page. Others ask you to read between the lines and work out a feeling, a motive or an attitude the writer has only hinted at. The best candidates know, instantly, which kind of reading each question wants.

This lesson teaches you to do both with confidence. You will learn to pin down explicit meaning quickly and accurately, to infer implicit meaning from clues in the wording, and to prove every point with a short, precise reference to the text. We model each move on real exam-style snippets, show a weak answer beside a strong one, and finish with a full question marked exactly the way an examiner would mark it.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Demonstrate understanding of written texts at a literal level, locating and interpreting explicit information.
  2. Infer implicit meaning, attitude and feeling that a writer suggests but does not state directly.
  3. Support points about meaning with precise reference to the words of the text.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Question 1 of Paper 1, the 20-mark comprehension task on Text A, is built almost entirely on this single ability: showing that you have understood a text. The short comprehension questions are worth marks you cannot afford to drop, because they are the most reliably winnable on the paper. They reward two distinct assessment objectives. R1 is understanding explicit meaning, the information a writer states openly. R2 is understanding implicit meaning and attitude, the things a writer implies but never spells out. A one-mark 'locate and retrieve' question is testing R1. A three-mark 'using your own words, explain why ...' question is usually testing R2 as well. If you can tell at a glance which is which, you stop wasting time and you stop losing marks.
