Pure metals are often too soft or too easily corroded for the jobs we ask of them. So we mix them. An alloy, a metal blended with other elements, can be harder, stronger and more resistant to rusting than the pure metal it came from, which is why brass instruments, stainless-steel cutlery and aircraft bodies are all alloys.

In this lesson you will learn what an alloy is, meet brass and stainless steel and what they are made from, and see why alloys are more useful than pure metals. You will also explain, in terms of structure, exactly why mixing different-sized atoms makes a metal harder and stronger.
