Health And Wellbeing

Akopọ

Health is not only the absence of illness. The World Health Organization defines it as complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and that wider view is exactly what makes it a Global Perspectives issue. Where you are born still decides how long you are likely to live: in 2025 the WHO reported a gap of about 33 years between the country with the highest life expectancy and the one with the lowest. The same report noted that a child in a poorer country is around 13 times more likely to die before the age of five than a child in a wealthy one.

This note does not ask you to memorise diseases. It shows you how to weigh the personal, national and global views of health, to test a health claim before you repeat it, to argue real debates such as private versus public healthcare from both sides, and to reason toward courses of action you could defend in a report or a team project. Mental health, healthcare access and pandemics all sit inside this one global question of who gets to be well.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Explain why health and wellbeing is an issue of global significance and describe its main causes and consequences.
  2. Compare personal, local/national and global perspectives on health and wellbeing, with empathy and supporting evidence.
  3. Evaluate evidence, sources and arguments relating to health and wellbeing, distinguishing fact, opinion, bias and vested interest.
  4. Develop a line of reasoning toward possible evidence-based courses of action on health and wellbeing, and suggest report and team-project angles.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Health and wellbeing means living a long life in good physical and mental health, with access to the care, clean water, food and safety that make that possible. It is global for three reasons. First, the gaps between countries are enormous and largely down to circumstances people cannot control: the WHO's 2025 world report on social determinants of health found a life-expectancy gap of about 33 years between the highest and lowest countries. Second, ill health crosses borders, as the COVID-19 pandemic showed when a new virus reached almost every nation within months. Third, the world has made shared promises: Sustainable Development Goal 3 commits every country to healthy lives and wellbeing for all.
