The Periodic Table

Akopọ

The Periodic Table is far more than a wall chart of element names and symbols. It is a map that organises every known element by the structure of its atoms, and once you can read it you can predict how an element will behave, what it will react with, and what kind of compounds it will form.

In this lesson you will learn how elements are ordered by atomic number, what groups and periods tell you about electronic configuration, and why elements in the same group share similar chemistry. You will also discover why the noble gases are so reluctant to react and how to classify elements as metals or non-metals using the table itself.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Understand how elements are arranged in the Periodic Table: in order of atomic number, in groups and periods
  2. Understand how to deduce the electronic configurations of the first 20 elements from their positions in the Periodic Table
  3. Understand how to use electrical conductivity and the acid-base character of oxides to classify elements as metals or non-metals
  4. Identify an element as a metal or a non-metal according to its position in the Periodic Table
  5. Understand how the electronic configuration of a main group element is related to its position in the Periodic Table
  6. Understand why elements in the same group of the Periodic Table have similar chemical properties
  7. Understand why the noble gases (Group 0) do not readily react

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

In the 1860s, Dmitri Mendeleev arranged the 63 elements known at the time into a table based on their properties and atomic masses. He left gaps for elements that had not yet been discovered, and when those elements were eventually found, they fitted his predictions almost perfectly. The modern Periodic Table has grown to over 100 elements, but the organising principle is even more powerful: elements are now arranged by atomic number, and the patterns that emerge let you predict bonding, reactivity, and physical properties at a glance.
