The Process Of Economic Development

Akopọ

Two countries can report almost the same income per person and still feel like different worlds to live in. One has schools within walking distance and a clinic that rarely runs out of medicine; the other has neither, even though its factories export goods worth billions. Economic development is the study of that gap: how national wealth is created, and whether it actually reaches the people who need it.

In this lesson you will compare countries at very different stages of development using real indicators, weigh up what free and fair trade can and cannot do for a poorer economy, and examine why international migration is both a development challenge and a development opportunity, for the people who leave, the people who stay, and the countries that receive them.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Three Human Development Index countries (one high, one medium, one low) giving an overview of global wealth disparities; education and health disparities in each nation; new emerging economies
  2. The roles of free and fair trade in economic development
  3. The development challenges and opportunities associated with international migration, including remittances and other impacts for host, source and migrant communities

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Economic development is not the same thing as economic growth. Growth means a country's total output is rising, usually measured as Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Development asks a harder question: is that extra wealth improving people's lives? A country can grow its GDP for years through oil exports or a construction boom while literacy stagnates, clinics stay empty of staff, and most of the new income settles with a small elite. Growth is a number; development is a judgement about whether people are actually better off.
