Interior Design

Akopọ

Interior design almost always begins with a room that already exists. The walls are where they are, the windows face where they face, the ceiling is the height it is, and there is a radiator in the worst possible place. That constraint is not a disadvantage: it is the discipline. An interior designer works on light, surface, circulation and furniture inside a volume somebody else built, and changes how it feels to be in it without moving a single load-bearing wall.

This note is about the inside of the box. You will learn to measure and draw an existing space, to plan how people move through it, to design lighting in layers rather than as one bulb in the middle of the ceiling, to build a material and surface palette you can defend, and to test it all with a sectional model and a real sample board. The designers here range from a Venetian museum to a London tea room, and every one of them changed a space with surface, light and detail rather than with demolition.

  1. Use the elements of three-dimensional design to develop and create interior environments
  2. Use a range of interior design materials, tools and techniques such as digital and non-digital design methods, graphic and construction materials, three-dimensional models and surface patterns/textures

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

The specification asks you to use the elements of three-dimensional design, which are light, space, form, scale and proportion, to develop and create interior environments, and to work with interior design materials, tools and techniques including digital and non-digital design methods, graphic and construction materials, three-dimensional models and surface patterns and textures. Two of those are specific to this area of study and are worth noticing: models are required, and surface is named as a design material in its own right.
