AO2 Explore

Akopọ

If AO1 is about looking at the world, AO2 is about playing with the materials you use to respond to it. Exploration in Art and Design means trying things - different media, different surfaces, different processes - not just settling on the technique you already know. Cambridge rewards candidates who show a broad and adventurous engagement with resources: the student who tries only pencil throughout a project cannot demonstrate the range this objective demands.

This note explains how to approach exploration purposefully rather than randomly, which media and processes to consider, how to document your experiments so they count as evidence, and how the examiner distinguishes genuine exploration from superficial variety.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Explore and select appropriate resources, media, techniques and processes.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

AO2 asks you to investigate a wide range of materials and methods and then make a reasoned choice of which to take forward. The word that carries the most weight is appropriate: exploration is not random experimentation. Every test, every trial, every sample should connect to your project's starting point and intentions. A student working on a project about 'Urban Decay' who explores textures by pressing wire mesh into monoprint ink, rubbing charcoal over corrugated card, and experimenting with bleach on black paper is demonstrating purposeful exploration. A student who tries watercolour portraits because they enjoy portraits, regardless of the theme, is not.

  1. What does AO2 in CIE IGCSE Art and Design require students to demonstrate? A. Accurate copying of an artist's style B. Exploration and selection of appropriate resources, media, techniques and processes C. Knowledge of art history from 1800 to the present D. Ability to produce a technically perfect final outcome Answer: B
  2. Which of the following is the best example of purposeful AO2 exploration for a project on 'Fragility'? A. Producing several pencil portraits because the student enjoys drawing faces B. Testing how wet tissue paper tears and overlapping pieces to create translucent layers relevant to the fragility theme C. Copying a famous painting about fragility from an art book D. Filling pages with random colour washes to see what happens Answer: B
  3. A student has explored six different media in their sketchbook but has not annotated any of the samples. What is the most significant weakness in their AO2 evidence? A. They have used too many different media B. The media are inappropriate for the subject C. There is no evidence of evaluation or selection - the examiner cannot see the student's decision-making D. Annotation is not required for AO2 Answer: C
  4. Which activity best demonstrates 'selection' as required by the AO2 descriptor? A. Trying ten different media without comment B. Writing a reasoned note choosing one technique over another because it better suits the project's intention C. Choosing the medium the student finds easiest D. Copying an artist's preferred medium Answer: B
  5. A student explores a technique by studying how an artist uses it and then trying it on their own subject, rather than copying the artist's picture. Why is this the stronger AO2 approach? A. It takes less time than copying B. It is genuine exploration of a process applied to the student's own work, not illustration C. Copying is forbidden by Cambridge D. It guarantees a technically perfect result Answer: B
