Composites

Akopọ

A composite is what you get when two different materials are combined so that the result outperforms either one on its own. In graphic products this is everywhere: a foil-lined juice carton, a laminated menu, a chipboard shelf and a particleboard display unit all marry materials to gain a property a single material could not provide. The drinks carton borrows paper for stiffness and printing, plastic for sealing and a wafer of aluminium foil for a perfect barrier against light and air. None of them alone would keep juice fresh on a shelf.

This note covers the graphic-products composites objectives: what a composite is and how it is classified by the way its parts are combined; the properties that make composites so useful, such as barrier performance, strength-to-weight and rigidity; the environmental impact, which is dominated by the difficulty of separating bonded layers for recycling; and the two named families, foil-based composites and particle-based composites, with the everyday products each one makes possible.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. demonstrate knowledge of composite materials and understand their classification, properties, environmental impact and uses
  2. demonstrate knowledge of the following composite materials: - foil based composites - particle based composites.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

A composite is made by combining two or more materials that stay distinct but work together, so the mixture has properties none of the parts has alone. Usually one part is a matrix that holds everything together and one is a reinforcement or barrier that supplies the special property. Plywood is wood veneers glued so the grain crosses for strength in every direction; glass-reinforced plastic is resin holding glass fibres for a light, strong shell. In graphic products the principle is the same: layer or mix materials so the product gains stiffness, a barrier, a printable face or low cost that no single sheet could give.

  1. What is a composite material? A. A single material used on its own B. Two or more materials combined so the result has better properties than either alone C. A material that has been recycled D. A pure metal foil Answer: B
  2. In a foil-based composite carton, what is the main job of the thin aluminium layer? A. To make the carton rigid B. To provide a printable branding surface C. To act as a barrier against light, oxygen, moisture and aroma D. To make the carton heat-sealable Answer: C
  3. Which of the following is a particle-based composite? A. Aluminium foil B. Chipboard (particleboard) C. Acrylic sheet D. Tracing paper Answer: B
  4. Why is MDF often chosen for painted display signage and cut letters? A. It has a strong visible wood grain B. It has smooth, grain-free faces and edges that machine cleanly and take paint well C. It is a foil-based composite D. It is fully transparent Answer: B
  5. Why is most foil-and-plastic composite packaging difficult to recycle? A. The materials biodegrade too quickly B. The bonded layers of different materials cannot easily be separated C. It contains no plastic D. It is too valuable to recycle Answer: B
