AO3 Develop

Akopọ

Development is where your project gains depth. Once you have recorded observations (AO1) and explored materials (AO2), AO3 asks you to push your ideas further by connecting your own work to the work of others - artists, designers, craftspeople, photographers - and using those connections to evolve your visual thinking. A portfolio that stays on the surface, repeating the same approach without growth, cannot access the higher bands. Development means the work at the end of the project should clearly be more resolved, more informed and more intentional than the work at the beginning.

This note covers how to research artists purposefully, how to make connections between contextual references and your own practice, how to show a genuine journey of development rather than a series of unrelated exercises, and what examiners mean by 'purposeful connections'.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Develop ideas through investigation and exploration, making purposeful connections to contextual references.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

AO3 asks you to grow your ideas through investigation and experimentation, and to make deliberate, working links to the art and design of others. Three elements make up this objective: development, investigation and contextual connections.

  1. What is the primary purpose of artist research in AO3 of CIE IGCSE Art and Design? A. To prove you have studied art history B. To copy a well-known style and demonstrate technical skill C. To provide purposeful connections that develop and inform your own practical work D. To fill pages in the sketchbook between practical exercises Answer: C
  2. Which of the following best demonstrates a purposeful link between a student's own work and an artist they have researched (AO3)? A. A written biography of Picasso with no follow-up practical work B. A page analysing how Picasso fragmented form in Cubism, followed by your own study of a still-life object using fragmented planes C. A printed copy of Guernica stapled into the sketchbook D. A list of famous artists relevant to the theme Answer: B
  3. What does 'development' mean in the context of AO3? A. Producing a greater number of finished pieces B. Using increasingly expensive materials C. Ideas growing and changing across the project through investigation and reflection D. Reaching a technically finished outcome quickly Answer: C
  4. An artist-study page contains a printed reproduction and a paragraph about the artist's life and dates, but the student's own work does not change afterwards. What is the main AO3 weakness? A. The reproduction should have been hand-drawn B. There is no purposeful connection - the research has not developed the student's own practice C. Biographical detail is banned by Cambridge D. The page uses too much colour Answer: B
  5. Why can honestly recording what did NOT work raise an AO3 mark? A. It fills more space in the sketchbook B. It shows the student investigating, judging and adapting, which is evidence of development C. Examiners prefer negative comments D. It proves the student used expensive materials Answer: B
