Physical Processes And Human Intervention Give Rise To Characteristic Coastal Landforms

Akopọ

Coastlines are among the most dynamic landscapes on Earth. Waves, weathering and gravity reshape cliffs, headlands and beaches on timescales from a single storm to thousands of years. The landforms at the coast are the visible result of a contest between erosion and deposition, with geology acting as the referee.

In this lesson you will learn how constructive and destructive waves shape the shore, how sub-aerial processes attack rock from above, and why geology controls which sections retreat fastest. You will trace the formation of erosional features such as caves, arches and stacks, and depositional features such as spits, bars and sand dunes.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Physical processes at work on the coast: marine processes (wave action, erosion, deposition and transportation, including longshore drift), weathering (mechanical, chemical and biological) and mass movement (sliding and slumping)
  2. Influence of geology, vegetation, people and sea-level changes on coastal environments
  3. Role of erosional and depositional processes in the development of landforms: headlands and bays, cliffs, wave-cut platforms, caves, arches, stacks and stumps, beaches, spits and bars

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Every wave carries energy that chips, grinds and dissolves rock. Material loosened from the land is carried along the shore and dropped wherever the sea loses energy. The balance between erosion and deposition determines whether a coastline grows or retreats.
