Cutting, Shaping And Forming

Every product begins life as raw stock: a sheet of card, a plank of pine, a bar of aluminium, a pellet of polymer. Turning that stock into a finished part means removing what you do not want and reshaping what is left. Cutting, shaping and forming is the family of workshop processes that does exactly that, and choosing the right one for the material in front of you is one of the core skills the 0445 examiner is looking for.

This note works through the processes used on each class of material listed in the syllabus: papers and boards, woods, metals and polymers. You will see which tools cut by slicing, which cut by abrasion and which reshape without removing anything at all, and you will learn to match a process to a material and a desired shape with confidence.

It helps to separate the workshop verbs before you meet the tools. Cutting removes material to reduce a piece to size or to make a shape, leaving waste behind: sawing a plank to length, shearing a metal sheet, guillotining card. Shaping refines an existing piece by taking small amounts away until the surface or edge is right: filing, planing, sanding, drilling a hole. Forming changes the shape of a piece without removing any material at all, usually by bending, folding or moulding: vacuum forming a polymer sheet, bending an acrylic strip over a heater, folding a net of card into a box. The first two are subtractive; forming conserves the material and simply rearranges it.
