Polymers

Akopọ

Polymers are the second great family of graphic materials. Where paper and card give a printable, foldable surface, polymers give transparency, waterproofing, flexibility and durability that fibre cannot. A clear drinks bottle, a laminating pouch, a self-adhesive vinyl shop sign, a polypropylene presentation folder and a 3D-printed model are all graphic products made from polymers. For the designer, the skill is knowing which named polymer gives the right balance of clarity, toughness, cost and recyclability.

This note covers the graphic-products polymer objectives: how polymers are classified into thermoplastics, thermosets and biopolymers; the stock forms (sheet, film, board, granule, resin) that the graphic designer actually buys; the properties that decide a choice; the named polymers from PET to PLA and from PVC to epoxy resin and what each is used for; and the environmental questions that now shape every polymer decision. The named materials are the heart of the syllabus, so each one is given a clear identity, property and use.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. demonstrate knowledge of polymers, including biopolymers, and understand their classification, stock forms, properties, environmental impact and uses
  2. demonstrate knowledge of thermo polymers, for example: - nylon - low- and high-density polyethylene (LDPE and HDPE) - polyethylene terephthalate (PET) - polyvinyl chloride (PVC) (including self-adhesive vinyl) - acrylic (PMMA) - polystyrene (PS) - polypropylene (PP) - acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) - polylactic acid (PLA)
  3. demonstrate knowledge of the following thermosetting polymers: - polyester resin - epoxy resin.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

A polymer is a material made of very long molecule chains built by joining thousands of small repeating units called monomers. The Greek roots say it plainly: 'poly' means many and 'mer' means part. Because the chains can be packed loosely or tightly, straight or branched, the family ranges from soft flexible films to hard rigid sheet. Graphic products lean on polymers wherever paper cannot cope: when a surface must be transparent, waterproof, wipeable, stretchy or long-lasting outdoors. A menu that survives a restaurant table, a banner that survives rain, and a bottle that holds fizzy liquid all rely on polymer properties.
